drug rehab is not a “one fits all”

Addiction, according to Ralph Nader, should never be treated as a crime. It has to be treated as a health problem. He furthered, “We do not send alcoholics to jail in this country. Over 500,000 people are in our jails who are nonviolent drug users.”
This is the sad reality. People addicted to drugs are shunned by society more than the destructive alcoholics. They deem drug addicts as lowlifes that the earth would be better off without them. They neglect or ignore the fact that drug addiction is NOT a disease but a mental disorder that convinces the afflicted that it’s everyone else who is ill, not himself.
People who are addicted to drugs come from all walks of life. Similar to alcoholics, drug addicts also need help. Since there are many addictive drugs nowadays and treatments for specific drugs differ, it follows that treatment also varies depending on the patient’s level and type of addiction.
As one website wonderfully stated, “drug rehab is not one fits all.” That is, though there many options for drug rehab available nowadays, there is no such thing as “THE treatment”. This is because the best drug treatment program is very specific to the individual involved. Consequently, it is important that you avail of the best possible treatment by doing thorough research and assessment on each program and seeking the assistance of compassionate and knowledgeable counselors in helping you make the most effective decision. It would be best if you make sure to get counselors that they themselves used to be drug addicts. After all, who better to pinpoint the best treatments than those who experienced them?
Although there is a lot of information that you have to know and understand before you begin to deal with your own particular addiction or the addictions of your loved ones, do not be overwhelmed. As the Chinese Proverb goes, “It is easy to get a thousand prescriptions but hard to get one single remedy.”
