Don’t replace your PC just yet

Written on Thursday, 19 of February, 2009 at 8:19 pm

Are quad core processors still necessary? Is the gigabyte video card which consumes much electricity really required? Many of us who are very fond of the latest gadgets often replace our PC’s almost every two years (once a year even). The reason is usually because of the slowing down of our programs and our present PC’s cannot cope up with our current software. But do our programs really slow down?

The fast development of PC hardware seems to outpace our software developers. Take for instance the quad core processors. Most applications have the same performance even when run in a single core or dual core PC. Another example is the windows OS. Almost every year they come up with a version which runs as fast as the previous version. The only programs I know that can really utilize the multi-cored PC’s are enterprise server applications. Even I don’t believe that the new games like red alert really require a quad core PC. As a programmer I know that the same quality games can be developed using even the single cored PC’s. So with all I have said, my point is: Don’t replace your PC unless you really need to.
