Death – a reminder on the wonders of living
Written on Sunday, 6 of September, 2009 at 7:15 am
My colleague’s grandmother died yesterday at 2 p.m. out of old age. Although they have been expecting the death, it was still quite painful for my colleague, especially since that grandmother was the one who took care of her in her parents’ stead when she was still young.
Clad in my Dansko shoes and Dolce & Gabbana coat, I charged the pouring rain first hour this morning just to be able to go to the wake and extend my condolences personally, and in behalf of my department as well. When I arrived at the wake, my colleague’s family, her mom in particular, was quite surprised to see me. It was a pleasant surprise for her, actually. You see, I woke up at 5 a.m. and traversed several towns to go there.
While meditating on my way to the wake, I recalled Mignon McLaughlin from The Neurotic’s Notebook, 1960, “The death of someone we know always reminds us that we are still alive – perhaps for some purpose which we ought to re-examine.”
Yep, we have to be grateful for each day that we wake up into and do our best to live happily for that day. After all, as Norman Cousins aptly put it,
“Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us
while we live.”
Carpe diem. Sieze the day.
