Is Technology Really Always Good For Us?

Written on Wednesday, 6 of July, 2011 at 11:43 pm

I have always preferred to do things manually than relying on machines and technology to do it for us.

Take riding cabs, for example. In my office, certain employees have this privilege called “tax shields” where we present receipts of certain categories and we get a chance to have a certain amount from these receipts deducted from the amount taken by the income tax.

The categories that were assigned to me were transportation and communication so naturally, I had to collect receipts from cab fares and purchases from gasoline and telephone companies. Everytime I hail a cab and get dropped off somewhere, I now ask them to give me a receipt.

Most of the cabs nowadays have a receipt printer incorporated with their meters, and more often than not, when I ask for receipts, they tell me that their printer is out of ink.

This is precisely why I prefer doing things manually. They could have written me a receipt instead, you know? I’m starting to think that maybe technology isn’t really always that helpful for us.

Got my dream item for my dream price

Written on Wednesday, 29 of June, 2011 at 7:57 am

I found a great way to buy the best items at the cheapest prices! Online auctions! It is like a garage sale posted online. You can do a Google search for these sites. Ebay is also an auction site, however the “buy now” option contradicts to the auction site idea.

The auction sites I am referring to are posted by companies who are selling their used items. Usually these items are of very high quality because they are intended for industrial purpose. They usually just come and go so just be a little patient while accessing these pages.

Anyhow, last week, I won an auction for a honda generator. I always wanted a generator at home, but I found it really expensive. Although a necessity in out town (since it is always raining here and blackouts are common) I could not afford to spend that much money.
Fortunately, my friend suggested this idea to me.

Oh well. I was just sharing. It is not everyday that I get a dream item for a dream price right? So I might as well brag about it.

Dreams of a little kid

Written on Monday, 20 of June, 2011 at 3:03 pm

When I was young I used to watch the stars with my brother until our parents scolded us for staying up late and forced us to go to bed. This was one of the reasons why I begged our mom to build a rooftop when our house was still being constructed.

When I was thirteen, our parents bought us both spotting scopes. It’s a smaller telescope used for low magnification visions. I loved watching birds nest and just staring at the wildlife around us. My brother started going to college, so most of the time I did this alone.

I kind of miss it, hanging out with my brother like that. Maybe when he graduates we’ll have more times like that together.

What kind of activities did you do when you were young, and who did you do it with?

Is bigger always better?

Written on Wednesday, 25 of May, 2011 at 10:42 pm

I’ve done a little survey with my gal pals.

I asked them the question, “Is bigger always better when it comes to men and lovemaking?”.

It just randomly popped into my head, and when something unanswerable such as that comes into my head, I wouldn’t be able to sleep unless I get some sort of resolution.

As I asked most of my friends, the answers came down to one thing– that they lean more on the performance, and that the size is always a bonus.

So if I actually do have curious male readers out there, there’s still hope! If you’re not very keen on the performance, there’s always male enhancement products to make up for your lack in the performance department.

I believe my friends recommended this certain website called extenze side effects. Some of their partners tried the products there and it turned out to be very effective!

It just never ceases to amaze me, what technology can do these days.

Collecting coins – economic sabotage?

Written on Thursday, 19 of May, 2011 at 10:46 pm

Earlier, I attended an interesting symposium about hobbies and crafts. Among the hobbies that gave me the most interest were Bonsai gardening, Sushi making and Airbrushing T-shirts. There was also this one speaker who told something intriguing. His topic was collecting coins. His first line made all the audience quite hooked – “Collecting coins is economic sabotage”.

At first he showed a coin with a silver eagle. It looked like a large penny however he said that it costs eight hundred dollars. When he got all our attention, he expounded on what he said at first.

Collecting coins can be a form of economic sabotage, he said. In the Philippines, he reports, there was an investigation regarding people who collected certain coins and exported them to China. He was not talking about a hundred coins, he was talking about millions. Reports said that these coins contain good quality metal that can be used as raw material.

Coins are usually made at a higher cost than their actual value, so using them as raw material is like stealing from the government. I never realized that until earlier.

Oh well, the speaker was a good one, however I still find collecting coins as boring.

A little attitude

Written on Sunday, 27 of March, 2011 at 5:44 pm

My little sister is currently in college and apparently custom laptops are the latest trend. Since she is under a BS Computer Science curriculum, naturally, most of them have laptops or family computers of their own, and with them having to bring their laptops to their laboratory classes most of the time, it’s quite hard to determine which person owns a certain laptop if more than one of them has the same model.

My sister made me come with her while she looked for skins and laptop bags, and I can say the designs are quite amusing. I ended up buying a purple skin and a matching bag myself!

I like adding a little touch of personality to my own things. It kind of expresses who I am and what I like in life, not to mention it makes everything even just a little prettier! Who wouldn’t want that?!

The smallest welding machine

Written on Wednesday, 16 of March, 2011 at 8:14 am

As weird as it sounds, right now, I want to learn welding. YES, that process of gluing metals, that welding. I was helping my dad search for garage door parts online but I thought that if I know how to weld I can fix it myself. Problem is, welding machines are so huge and we definitely do not have any space for that in the garage.

Upon searching on tutorials on youtube, I came across this video about the “smallest welding machine” just got to this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjPpQKkvjQU. It is a patented invention by a Filipino inventor and the machine is as big as a cucumber (where did that come from?). Anyhow, it is so portable that you can put it in your handbag. I showed it to my dad and even He was surprised. So right then we ordered a portable welding machine online. We postponed looking for the garage door parts first. We’ll try to fix it ourselves first.

Working Environment

Written on Sunday, 6 of March, 2011 at 9:24 pm

As an employed person, one of the factors I consider when choosing a company is the work environment. The current state of the office that I am working on affects my mood and performance, overall.

I know it’s a trivial thing, but just a tip to all the employers out there: make sure your working environment is comfortable and eye pleasing. It makes a big difference.

Stress and work are two things that you can’t separate from each other, but with the right office design and environment, stress can be reduced exponentially, thus making your employees more productive and happy.

Take me, for example. I’d prefer working on a place with modern office chairs than one with tiny cubicles and plastic chairs. It would help me feel comfortable while working, thus helping me think and act more efficiently.

Always pay attention to the little things. When combined together they make something big.

On easily getting bored about work 5

Written on Friday, 25 of February, 2011 at 5:34 am

As expected, I quit my job again. Well… sort of. Actually, I moved to a bigger company for growth. But because I really liked my job, again I applied and was accepted as a Web Developer. This company is my current company.
At first it was fun. New people, new company, better pay, and a whole lot of benefits. I had never experienced this kind of environment before. It was all corporate dinners, client meetings, out of town trips and trainings. Work seemed like the last priority.
I was given a two month project engagement. It was fun. After completing it, I was recognized so many times that I felt my ego grew ten folds. But then it hit me. I got a new project and again it was big. Two years engagement and that was still an optimistic estimate. After ten months working on my project, I felt burned out. I felt history repeating itself, and I could not really do anything about it. It is like reading http://www.weightlosssupplement.org but never being able to take the pills.
And so, where was I. Ah yes, my mentor. After hearing my story he smiled. “You are just hungry for new knowledge”, he said. Explaining, he said, from what he understood , I always leave the company for something new. I kept seeking for new challenges and new things to learn. So then He suggested, “why don’t you try teaching”. At first I thought it was a crazy idea but then he said that I could be a trainor in the company. Much like an internal professor in charge of training the newbies.
I kind of liked the idea, honestly. I am really sure that teaching can really give me the challenge that I want while keeping the work that I love. It was just great. I have never felt motivated in a while. So now I am in it. I am going to be a trainor.
Talking to experienced people really has its benefits. In my case, he made me realize things that I really want to do and things that I still need to do. So now I rest my case.

On easily getting bored about work 4

Written on Friday, 25 of February, 2011 at 5:28 am

And so I studied Java Programming. It was fun and challenging at the same time. I took it as a short course in an IT school and I could say I did pretty well. After completing the course, I fired up my resume and posted it online.
I got a decent job offer as a Web Applications Developer after I quit my job as a design engineer. Back then, I knew nothing about web programming, more so with web applications. Fortunately, the company gave me a good training, which made me into one hell of a programmer. I got my break when I got a huge project lasting for a year and a half.
At first I enjoyed the job. I was stress free. I literally looked like I used the best anti wrinkle cream. Stress free get it? I could finally exercise my creativity once again. The project engagement lasted for a year and a half. When the project was completed, I was assigned to support it. Again things became less challenging.
